CABO'S BEST KEPT SECRETS

Our luxury globetrotter Danielle Spencer spent six months of 2012 living in America’s favourite spring break and luxury celebrity destination, Cabo San Lucas. Danielle shares with BOE the best-kept secrets of one of Mexico’s most luxurious beach resorts.

Cabo San Lucas, formally known as ‘Cabo’, is located on the Baja California Sur (South). Just a two hour flight from LA, this is a very popular holiday spot for North American tourists, and the gigantic cruise liners that frequent the shores of the famous Medano Beach, which caters for beach lovers, sun worshipers, night clubbers, shoppers, golfers and sport fishing.

Best Place to Live Pedregal

Living in Mexico was a different experience from most places I’ve travelled to. The most important factor when finding a place to stay was safety. Cabo is relatively safe and even as a woman alone I never came across any problems. Pedregal is considered one of the wealthiest of areas to live – many celebrities own holiday homes here. A stunning location with mansions situated in the rocky jagged hilltops overlooking the Pacific ocean and Medano Bay Marina.

Best Hotel The best hotel to stay in Cabo depends on the type of trip you’re planning. Most hotels in Cabo are of a 4 or 5 Star rating. Some are family orientated hotels, some good for party-goers and others for the higher niche market for romantic hideaways. There are many timeshare resorts in the area which are very popular with American tourists. The best hotels for Cabo for each category would be:

Capella Nestled on a beach and secluded by the privacy of mountains, this resort is rated the second most popular hotel for celebrities in the world. Book yourself into one of the luxurious suites with your own private pool and incredible sea view, or just experience the hotel by booking a table at the extravagant El Farallon, a seafood restaurant on the beach perfect for a romantic dinner listening to the waves crashing at the shore.

ME – Cabo Melia Cabo is a young fashionable hip hotel with prime beach front location and home to the famous Nikki Beach. Mingle amongst young celebs and socialites in this stylish and contemporary hotel. I had a few cocktails with Vinnie Jones here.

Villa Del Arco This hotel is best for a family, with various kids entertainment facilities, a pirate ship in the pool as well as a fabulous spa and gym for the parents – try the hot stone massage. All 362 rooms here have a pool or ocean view with large balconies, and you have the option of self-catering or an all-inclusive package.

Best Pool Party Nikki Beach There are plenty of great places to party in Cabo, especially during spring break – March and April. My most memorable pool party would have to be Nikki Beach at the ME Cabo located on the very picturesque Medano beach. Nikki beach is renowned globally for its chic clubs and parties around the world. The pool parties in Cabo are usually on the weekend. Or take it easy on the lower deck with huge white beds and flowing white sheer curtains while you enjoy the best Mojitos in town.

Best Beach Medano Beach affords some of the most stunning views in the world with great weather all year round. White sand and turquoise waters with rock formations that are world renowned for being the last part of land on that latitude – Mexicans call it Finisterra, or Land’s End. The arch at the very end was naturally carved, the famous El Arco. I’ve spotted flying mantarays and dolphins almost daily while sunbathing here. Medano beach is lined with hotels, cruise liners and bars, as well as vendors strolling up and down selling souvenirs and trinkets. You’ll be able to do jet skiing, boat trips, dinner cruises, fishing and much more. And if you’re looking for a party bar try the Mango Deck Beach Bar.

For a quieter, more romantic spot, drive further up toward San Jose through the desolate sandy desert with cactuses sporadically spaced out, and you’ll reach a lovely hotel and beach resort called Fiesta Americana with fabulous restaurants and an empty secluded beach. Dotted with large straw shaded umbrellas and a ‘service’ button on the pole, this is the perfect lazy spot for tanning, snoozing and relaxing.

Best Place to Shop Puerto Paraiso Shopping Mall The Mexican character is apparent throughout Cabo San Lucas with a traditional town square, restaurants, markets, shopping malls and boulevards lined with palm trees to compliment its maze of narrow and cobbled one-way streets. Puerto Paraiso Shopping Mall is small but the best place to find luxury items.

Best Activity Cabo San Lucas has a large marina, great for watching some of the world’s richest yacht owners cruising in. I would watch from the Tikki Bar directly opposite to get a sneak peak of one of America’s famous basket ball players. Local charter fleets compete for claims to world records for blue marlin, striped marlin, swordfish, sailfish, dorado, roosterfish, tuna and many other species. Competitors travel from all over the world for game fishing. And whether or not you’re a professional, it’s worth the experience. I once caught a yellow fin tuna which took me over an hour to reel! You can also book dinner cruises and snorkeling trips to lover’s beach. I once spotted a huge sea lion literally three meters away from me while snorkeling.

The Best Golf Course Pamilla

Playing golf in Cabo, you have views over the sea of Cortez. Nothing can beat a gentleman’s sport in these surroundings. Cabo is now home to a 27-hole Championship golf course located at the Palmilla Resort, designed by the renowned Jack Nicklaus.

Best Place to Eat Mi Casa has to be a firm favourite, famous for its setting and a landmark in Cabo San Lucas for being so colourful and traditionally Mexican. Mi Casa meaning My House in Spanish is located just off the town square. Try their stuffed poblano chiles and their tamales. And enjoy the traditional trio guitarists serenading you while you enjoy your meal –  it’s hard to resist the romance it brings into the air.

For an authentic Italian meal, Salvatores is perfect with an outdoor candle-lit terrace. I would recommend the delicious Lasagna. Doc is also great for Italian fare, hidden away in the market square beside a little church. Even if I’d cooked at home, I would walk here just for a coffee and dessert – try the crème brule. And the friendly owner makes the experience even more special, giving personal attention to all guests.

If you like your meat or a good steak then, I would recommend the Argentinean Restaurant Chamuyo, where you can enjoy a typical Argentinean “empanada”. The staff are Argentinean or at least Latin Americans so the experience is even more authentic. They usually recommended the best red wine to compliment the food of your choice.
